Yesterday I picked up a new mic, a Blue Spark, for use on the drum kit currently being used in the studio. Our current mic complement for drums is: Snare (SM58), Toms (SM57's) Hihat (SM58), Cymbals/Overhead (AKG 451), Room mics (Nuemann U87, Blue Dragonfly), Kick (Blue Spark) or RE 20.
We're getting decent sounds, it's all about the placement of the mics! Even though we have a nice board to mix through onto the Radar system (Toft Audio - the Trident maker), I don't want to color things with any unneccsary eq during tracking.
So tonight we tracked drums on another song, and I added a piano part. We only have about 7 days left to get the rest of the tracks done, so this is going to be fast and furious; but we are making good headway.
I'm also busy cranking away on the string part for another friends work, in hopes to get it placed on a compilation cd early next year
More to come. It's late.

There it is
So I am starting this blog in the middle of a recording project; but this blog is really meant to be sort of a timeline noting my transition from day-time programmer to full time musician. I cannot predict how soon this transition will be complete, but it is certainly well under way and there are a number of projects in my queue that will move me in the direction I want to go.
So that's all for now, it's late, I just got done recording drums for one of my partners songs (Mark Johnson) and I gotta get home to sleep.
More to come.
